Charles
Oudin, Paris, scarce and unusual
chatelaine watch.
This piece is in a steamed horn case with applied hand painted porcelain
tablets. The back of the case has an applied silver crest that looks Scandinavian
or Danish in origin and may suggest Royal ownership. The case is opened by
depressing the small button at the base by the 6 and lifting the top cover up
and off. The case is suspended from the original leather and steel chatelaine
which is exhibiting expected age related wear for a piece in excess of 200 years
old. The leather is decorated with shaped metal studs and the original key with
steamed horn mount is incredibly still attached as is the original glass. The
white enamel dial is in very fine condition with fine Breguet numbers. There is
some light edge flaking around the front winding apertures as could be expected,
and one isolated edge flake at the 7. The unusually shaped gold hands look to be
original. The movement is released with the offset catch at the 5 and is a fine
10 jewel flat bar cylinder escapement with flat brass 3-arm balance and straight
bridges. Curiously the signature has been struck through at some time in the
past, but is none the less still quite legible and reads ;
Ch. Oudin,
Medaille D'Or
Palais Royale 52
The piece is key wind and set and measures 42mm diameter and 130mm total length
with the chatelaine. £sold
