Un-issued customs and excise travelling Sykes hydrometer set by
Lennie of Edinburgh. Mahogany box with blank brass plaque to the top. Fitted interior lined with burgundy silk and velvet with a bulb
and full set of weights all marked with the same number and ivory backed
thermometer intact, and signed for Lennie, along with the original glass sample
jar and magnifying glass. Superb piece in all original condition c.1890.

James Lennie was an Optical Instrument maker working in 14 Leith Street
Edinburgh from 1840 until his death in 1854 where his widow Eliza continued the
business until 1857. Eliza moved to 46 Princes Street in 1857 and continued to
trade in her own name.
Un-issued customs and excise Sykes hydrometer set with twin proof rules. Mahogany box with boxwood stringing and completely blank ivory cartouche. Fitted interior lined with burgundy silk and velvet with a bulb and full set of weights all marked with the same number. Ivory backed thermometer intact, and again unsigned. Pair of mint condition single slide boxwood proof rules again unsigned. A most unusual set with no markings other than the serial number and the Sykes patent. Box size; 25cm x 11.5cm x 5.5cm. £265 ($530)
Jointed brass 15-section ullage / dipping rule. Graduations marked from 10-150. No makers marks. Approx 56cm long and a substantial weight. £140 ($280)
